Experience one of Mount Kilimanjaro’s most scenic and gradual climbing routes on a ten-day journey combining pre-climb preparation in Arusha, an eight-day mountain trek via the Lemosho Route and a post-climb recovery night.

Beginning on the quieter western side of Kilimanjaro, the route progresses through rainforest, the expansive Shira Plateau, high-altitude desert and alpine terrain before joining the southern circuit through Lava Tower, Barranco and Karanga.

The journey then continues to Barafu for the summit attempt toward Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres before descending through Mweka. The longer itinerary provides additional time for gradual altitude adjustment and varied mountain scenery, while recognising that weather, health, fitness and individual response to altitude can affect progress and that reaching the summit can never be guaranteed.

Your Kilimanjaro Journey

Day-by-Day Lemosho Route Itinerary

Ten days combine pre-climb preparation, an eight-day Lemosho mountain trek and a post-climb recovery night, allowing a gradual journey from Kilimanjaro's western forests to Uhuru Peak and descent through Mweka.

Duration 10 Days / 9 Nights
Mountain Trek 8 Days • Lemosho Route
Highest Point Uhuru Peak • 5,895 m
Start & Finish Arusha
Day 01

Arrive in northern Tanzania and transfer to your confirmed accommodation in Arusha. Use the remainder of the day to rest after your journey and prepare for Kilimanjaro.

Meet your mountain team for a detailed briefing covering the Lemosho Route, daily routine, weather, altitude, equipment and mountain safety.

Your trekking equipment can also be reviewed so that any missing rental items or final preparations can be completed before travelling toward Londorossi and the Lemosho trail the following morning.

Location Arusha
Main Activity Briefing & Gear Check
Overnight Arusha Hotel
Arrival Briefing Gear Check Rest
Day 02

Depart Arusha and travel toward Kilimanjaro's western side for park registration and the beginning of your Lemosho climb.

Once the mountain crew has organised equipment and supplies, begin walking through the lower montane rainforest. The forest environment can be humid and trails may be muddy after rain.

Continue gradually upward toward Mti Mkubwa, also known as Big Tree Camp, at approximately 2,650 metres for your first mountain evening.

Route Lemosho → Mti Mkubwa
Approx. Elevation ~2,650 m
Overnight Mti Mkubwa Camp

Day 03

Leave the forest behind as the route gradually enters heath and moorland vegetation. The environment opens noticeably as you gain elevation.

Continue toward the western edge of the Shira Plateau, a broad high-altitude landscape formed from Kilimanjaro's ancient volcanic history.

Arrive at Shira 1 Camp at approximately 3,500 metres. Walk slowly, continue drinking regularly and allow your body time to adjust to the increasing altitude.

Day 04

Continue across the expansive Shira Plateau on a relatively measured trekking day designed to maintain progress while supporting gradual acclimatization.

The surrounding vegetation becomes increasingly sparse as you move higher, while views toward Kibo and across the plateau may open when cloud and weather conditions allow.

Reach Shira 2 Camp at approximately 3,850 metres. Depending on conditions and guide planning, additional acclimatization walking may be considered around camp.

Route Shira 1 → Shira 2
Approx. Elevation ~3,850 m
Overnight Shira 2 Camp
Shira Plateau Acclimatization Kibo Views High Moorland
Day 05

Leave Shira 2 and continue through increasingly barren high-altitude terrain toward Lava Tower at approximately 4,600 metres.

This is one of the important acclimatization stages of the route. You gain significant elevation during the day before descending to sleep lower at Barranco.

Continue down toward Barranco Camp at approximately 3,900 metres. The dramatic Barranco Wall rises above camp and forms the first major challenge of the following day's walk.

High Point Lava Tower • ~4,600 m

Overnight Barranco • ~3,900 m

Day 06

Begin with the ascent of the Barranco Wall. The route looks dramatic from below, but it is generally tackled as a guided scramble rather than a technical rock climb.

Follow your guide carefully through the steeper sections before reaching higher ground and continuing across a series of ridges and valleys.

Arrive at Karanga Camp at approximately 4,000 metres. This additional night helps break the journey before the higher summit base camp and provides more time for altitude adjustment.

Day 07

Leave Karanga and continue gradually upward toward Barafu through increasingly sparse alpine terrain.

Reach Barafu Camp at approximately 4,600 metres. The remainder of the day focuses on rest, hydration, meals and preparing your summit clothing and equipment.

Your mountain guide will review the summit schedule, layering, headlamp preparation, water management and safety procedures before you rest ahead of the overnight ascent.

Route Karanga → Barafu
Approx. Elevation ~4,600 m
Overnight Barafu Camp

Day 08

Wake around midnight or shortly before and prepare for the most demanding stage of your Lemosho journey. Begin ascending slowly through cold, dark high-altitude conditions with your guides.

Continue toward the crater rim and, if your health, altitude response and conditions allow, onward toward Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres — the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and in Africa.

Reaching the summit is never guaranteed. Your guide may require you to stop or descend if altitude symptoms, weather, exhaustion or other safety concerns arise.

After the summit attempt, descend back through Barafu and continue significantly lower to Mweka Camp for food and a well-earned rest.

Highest Point Uhuru Peak • 5,895 m
Main Activity Summit Attempt & Descent
Overnight Mweka Camp • ~3,000 m
Summit Attempt Uhuru Peak 5,895 m Mweka Descent
Day 09

After breakfast, continue descending through progressively greener terrain as you return to the lower forest zone.

Reach Mweka Gate and complete the necessary park formalities before saying farewell to the mountain crew.

Meet your vehicle and transfer back to Arusha. Check into your post-climb hotel and enjoy a proper shower, comfortable meal and relaxed recovery evening after the mountain.

Route Mweka → Arusha
Main Activity Final Descent & Transfer
Overnight Arusha Hotel
Mweka Gate Mountain Finish Hot Shower Recovery
Day 10

Enjoy breakfast and a more relaxed morning after completing your Kilimanjaro journey.

According to your onward plans, transfer for your departure flight or continue into another Tanzania experience.

Popular extensions include Tarangire, Serengeti and Ngorongoro safaris or a slower Zanzibar beach holiday after the physical demands of the climb.

Altitude & safety note: Kilimanjaro is a high-altitude mountain expedition. Although the longer Lemosho itinerary provides additional time for gradual acclimatization, reaching Uhuru Peak cannot be guaranteed. Your guide may adjust pace, timing or progress and may require descent if altitude symptoms, health, weather or other safety conditions make continued ascent unsuitable.

Kilimanjaro Questions

Lemosho Route FAQs

Helpful answers about the route, altitude, camping, preparation and what to expect from this longer Kilimanjaro itinerary.

Why choose the Lemosho Route?

Lemosho approaches Kilimanjaro from the western side and provides a scenic transition through forest and across the Shira Plateau before joining the southern circuit. Its longer itinerary also gives climbers more time to progress gradually through increasing altitude.

Is reaching Uhuru Peak guaranteed?

No. Summit success can never be guaranteed. Individual altitude response, health, weather, fatigue and other conditions affect every climb. Your mountain guide's safety decisions always take priority.

Is Lemosho easier than Machame?

Both are demanding high-altitude Kilimanjaro routes. The longer Lemosho itinerary provides a more gradual overall schedule before joining sections also used by the Machame approach, but climbers still need appropriate fitness, preparation and acclimatization.

Where do we sleep during the Lemosho climb?

Lemosho uses designated tented mountain camps. This itinerary normally includes Mti Mkubwa, Shira 1, Shira 2, Barranco, Karanga, Barafu and Mweka. Hotels are used before and after the mountain trek.

Why do we trek through Lava Tower?

The Lava Tower stage takes you to a significantly higher altitude before you descend to sleep lower at Barranco. This forms an important part of the itinerary's gradual acclimatization strategy.

Is the Barranco Wall technical climbing?

The normal route is generally considered a guided scramble rather than technical rock climbing. You may use your hands for balance in some sections and should follow your guide's instructions throughout.

What happens if I develop altitude symptoms?

Tell your guide immediately. Symptoms should never be hidden or ignored. Depending on their severity, your guide may reduce the pace, stop further ascent or arrange descent. Reaching the summit is always secondary to safety.

Do I need previous climbing experience?

Technical mountaineering experience is not normally required for the standard Lemosho route, but previous hiking experience, good fitness and preparation for several consecutive trekking days are strongly beneficial.

What conditions should I prepare for?

Conditions can range from humid forest and strong daytime sun to wind, rain and sub-zero summit temperatures. Proper layering, waterproof clothing, suitable footwear, gloves, warm headwear and other mountain equipment are essential.

Can I add a safari or Zanzibar after Kilimanjaro?

Yes. The package can continue into Tarangire, Serengeti and Ngorongoro or onward to Zanzibar. The post-climb Arusha night gives you an opportunity to rest before beginning the next part of the journey.
