Experience Tanzania’s second-highest mountain on a five-day journey combining pre-trek preparation in Arusha with four days of trekking through Arusha National Park to Mount Meru’s Socialist Peak at approximately 4,565 metres.

Beginning at Momella Gate, the route progresses through open grassland and montane forest toward Miriakamba before climbing higher to Saddle Hut beneath the dramatic volcanic slopes of Meru. An optional acclimatization walk toward Little Meru adds further mountain experience before the overnight summit attempt along the upper ridge toward Socialist Peak.

After the summit attempt, the route descends through Saddle and Miriakamba before returning to Momella Gate. The trek offers varied vegetation, volcanic scenery and opportunities to encounter wildlife on the lower slopes, although wildlife sightings, clear summit views and reaching the summit itself can never be guaranteed.

Mount Meru Questions

Mount Meru Trek FAQs

Helpful answers about altitude, wildlife, mountain huts, the summit route and preparing for this Arusha National Park trek.

How high is Mount Meru?

Mount Meru's highest point, Socialist Peak, is approximately 4,565 metres above sea level. It is Tanzania's second-highest mountain after Kilimanjaro.

Why is this a four-day mountain trek?

TANAPA recommends a four-day Mount Meru itinerary to provide more time for acclimatization. The planned mountain nights are Miriakamba, Saddle and Miriakamba again after the summit attempt before descending on the final day.

Why is an armed ranger required?

Mount Meru lies inside Arusha National Park and the lower trekking route passes through active wildlife habitat. TANAPA requires Mount Meru climbing groups to be accompanied by an armed ranger escort.

Can we see wildlife while trekking?

Wildlife can be encountered on the lower slopes and forest sections, including giraffes, buffalo, monkeys, antelope and birdlife. These are wild animals, however, so particular sightings cannot be guaranteed.

Where do we sleep on Mount Meru?

The standard route uses the Miriakamba and Saddle mountain huts. On this four-day itinerary, you stay at Miriakamba on the first mountain night, Saddle on the second and Miriakamba again following the summit attempt.

What is the Little Meru acclimatization walk?

After reaching Saddle Hut, climbers may undertake an acclimatization walk toward Little Meru, which rises to approximately 3,800 metres. Whether the walk is undertaken depends on weather, timing, fitness and guide assessment.

Is reaching Socialist Peak guaranteed?

No. Mountain summits can never be guaranteed. Weather, altitude, fitness, health and trail conditions may all affect progress. Your guide and ranger team's safety decisions always take priority over reaching the summit.

How difficult is the Mount Meru summit day?

Summit day is the most demanding part of the trek. It begins during the night and includes steep, rocky and exposed sections before the long descent through Saddle to Miriakamba. Good fitness, careful pacing and following guide instructions are important.

Is Mount Meru useful before Kilimanjaro?

Mount Meru can provide several consecutive trekking days and experience at elevations above 4,000 metres, which some travellers use as preparation before a Kilimanjaro climb. It does not, however, guarantee how an individual will respond to Kilimanjaro's higher altitude.

Can Mount Meru be combined with safari or Zanzibar?

Yes. Mount Meru is conveniently located close to Arusha and can be followed by Tarangire, Serengeti and Ngorongoro, a Kilimanjaro climb or a Zanzibar beach holiday.
