Experience Mount Kilimanjaro on an eight-day Machame Route climb designed to provide a gradual progression through the mountain’s changing ecological zones while allowing additional time for acclimatisation.

The journey begins in the rainforest at Machame Gate, crosses the Shira Plateau through Shira 1 and Shira 2 camps, climbs high toward Lava Tower before descending to Barranco, continues across the Barranco Wall and Karanga Valley, and reaches Barafu Camp for the summit attempt.

From there, the route climbs toward Stella Point and Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres before descending through Mweka Camp and Mweka Gate. The additional Shira Plateau stage gives the itinerary a slower early rhythm, but Kilimanjaro remains a demanding high-altitude trek and reaching the summit can never be guaranteed.

Your Kilimanjaro Journey

Day-by-Day Machame Route Itinerary

Eight trekking days take you from the rainforest at Machame Gate across the Shira Plateau, Lava Tower, Barranco, Karanga and Barafu before the Uhuru Peak summit attempt and descent through Mweka.

Duration 8 Days / 7 Nights
Route Machame Route
Highest Point Uhuru Peak • 5,895 m
Mountain Stay Tented Camps
Day 01

After breakfast at your pre-climb accommodation, meet your mountain team and transfer to Machame Gate for registration and final preparations before beginning the trek.

The trail climbs steadily through Kilimanjaro's montane rainforest, where conditions can be humid, wet and muddy. Walk at a controlled pace as your guide begins introducing the rhythm that will be used throughout the climb.

Reach Machame Camp for your first evening on the mountain, followed by dinner and an overnight stay in your tent.

Elevation Approx. 1,800 → 2,835 m
Trekking Time Approx. 5–7 Hours
Overnight Machame Camp
Rainforest Mountain Trek Tented Camp Acclimatisation Begins
Day 02

Leave Machame Camp and continue upward as the dense rainforest gradually gives way to heath and moorland.

The trail becomes steeper in sections and begins to open toward wider mountain views. Your guide will keep the pace deliberately steady as altitude becomes an increasingly important part of the journey.

Arrive at Shira 1 Camp on the western side of the Shira Plateau for dinner, rest and your second night on Kilimanjaro.

Elevation Approx. 2,835 → 3,500 m
Trekking Time Approx. 4–5 Hours
Overnight Shira 1 Camp
Shira Plateau Moorland Mountain Views Steady Ascent
Day 03

Continue across the broad Shira Plateau on a shorter trekking day designed to keep the early part of the climb gradual.

The landscape is increasingly open, with views across the plateau and toward Kilimanjaro's upper slopes when weather conditions are clear.

After reaching Shira 2, your guide may include an additional acclimatisation walk if weather, timing and the condition of the group make it appropriate.

Elevation Approx. 3,500 → 3,850 m
Trekking Time Approx. 3–4 Hours
Overnight Shira 2 Camp
Shira Plateau Acclimatisation Open Landscapes Tented Camp
Day 04

This is one of the most important acclimatisation days of the Machame Route. Trek gradually toward Lava Tower, reaching approximately 4,630 metres before descending again.

Spending part of the day at a higher altitude before sleeping lower at Barranco follows the climb-high, sleep-lower approach used to support acclimatisation.

Descend into the Barranco Valley and arrive at Barranco Camp beneath the dramatic Barranco Wall.

High Point Lava Tower • Approx. 4,630 m
Trekking Time Approx. 6–8 Hours
Overnight Barranco Camp • ~3,900 m
Lava Tower Acclimatisation Alpine Desert Barranco Valley
Day 05

Begin with the famous Barranco Wall, a steep section involving careful walking and hands-on scrambling through several passages.

Your mountain guides will lead the group through the wall before the route continues across a series of ridges and valleys toward Karanga.

This is another relatively shorter stage, providing time to eat, rest and continue adapting before moving higher toward Barafu.

Destination Karanga Camp
Trekking Time Approx. 4–5 Hours
Overnight Karanga • ~3,995 m
Barranco Wall Karanga Valley Scrambling Acclimatisation
Day 06

Leave Karanga and continue steadily into increasingly sparse alpine desert toward Barafu Camp, the final camp before the summit attempt.

After reaching camp, the priority shifts to food, hydration, final equipment preparation and rest. Your lead guide will explain the planned summit schedule and review the group's condition.

Summit departure is normally late at night or around midnight, depending on the guide's plan, weather and conditions on the mountain.

Elevation Approx. 3,995 → 4,673 m
Trekking Time Approx. 3–5 Hours
Overnight Barafu Camp
Barafu Alpine Desert Summit Preparation Early Rest
Day 07

Begin the longest and most demanding stage of the climb during the night, ascending slowly from Barafu toward Kilimanjaro's crater rim.

Continue toward Stella Point and, if your condition, altitude response, weather and guide assessment allow, proceed along the crater rim toward Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres.

After the summit attempt, begin the long descent back toward Barafu and continue lower to Mweka Camp, where you can eat, rest and spend your final night on the mountain.

Highest Point Uhuru Peak • 5,895 m
Trekking Time Approx. 12–16 Hours Total
Overnight Mweka Camp • ~3,100 m
Summit Attempt Stella Point Uhuru Peak Long Descent
Day 08

After breakfast, complete the final descent through Kilimanjaro's lower forest toward Mweka Gate.

The environment gradually becomes greener and warmer as you lose altitude, marking a dramatic contrast with the alpine and summit landscapes of the previous days.

After completing park formalities, meet your transfer vehicle and return to your confirmed hotel in Moshi or Arusha for a shower, meal and well-earned rest.

Finish Mweka Gate
Trekking Time Approx. 3–4 Hours

Kilimanjaro note: This itinerary provides additional time for acclimatisation, but altitude affects every climber differently and reaching Uhuru Peak can never be guaranteed. Weather, trail conditions, health and your guide's safety assessment may require changes to timing, pace or the decision to continue higher. Always report symptoms or concerns promptly to your mountain guide.

Kilimanjaro Questions

Machame Route FAQs

Helpful information about difficulty, altitude, accommodation, equipment, weather and preparing for your Kilimanjaro climb.

Is reaching Uhuru Peak guaranteed?

No. Kilimanjaro is a high-altitude mountain and summit success can never be guaranteed. Individual acclimatization, health, weather, fatigue and other conditions can affect progress. Your guide's safety instructions always take priority over reaching the summit.

How difficult is the Machame Route?

Machame is a demanding multi-day high-altitude trek. It does not normally require technical climbing skills, but climbers need reasonable fitness, endurance and preparation for long walking days, steep terrain, changing weather and the effects of altitude.

Where do we sleep on the mountain?

The Machame Route uses designated tented camps rather than mountain huts. Your itinerary normally includes Machame, Shira, Barranco, Karanga, Barafu and Mweka camps. Before the climb you stay at your confirmed hotel in Arusha.

Why does the itinerary include Lava Tower?

The Lava Tower day allows climbers to reach a higher elevation before descending to sleep lower at Barranco. This climb-high, sleep-lower pattern forms an important part of the route's acclimatization profile.

Is the Barranco Wall technical climbing?

The Barranco Wall is normally considered a guided scramble rather than a technical rock climb. Climbers use hands for balance in several places and should follow their guide's instructions carefully. Conditions can vary with weather.

What happens if I experience altitude sickness?

Tell your guide immediately if you experience headaches, nausea, dizziness, unusual fatigue or other concerning symptoms. Your guide will monitor your condition and may slow the ascent, stop further climbing or arrange descent when necessary. Mountain safety takes priority over the summit.

What is the best time to climb Kilimanjaro?

Kilimanjaro can be climbed during different parts of the year, but drier periods are generally preferred. January to February and June to October are commonly considered favourable periods. Mountain weather can still change quickly at any time.

Do I need previous mountain climbing experience?

Previous technical mountaineering experience is not normally required for the standard Machame Route, but previous hiking experience and good physical preparation are strongly beneficial. Climbers should be comfortable walking for several consecutive days at altitude.

Can I rent trekking equipment in Tanzania?

Selected trekking equipment may be available for rental. Tell us what equipment you already have when enquiring so that required rental items can be identified before the climb. Availability and rental charges are confirmed separately.

Can I combine Kilimanjaro with safari or Zanzibar?

Yes. The climb can be followed by a northern Tanzania safari, Zanzibar beach holiday or both. We recommend allowing appropriate recovery time before beginning another physically demanding activity.
