Ready To Explore With A Professional Guide?

Experience Mount Kilimanjaro from its distinctive northern side on an eight-day journey combining pre-climb preparation in Arusha, a six-day mountain trek via the Rongai Route and a post-climb recovery night before departure or onward travel.

The route progresses from the Rongai trail through forest, heath and increasingly open alpine terrain toward Simba Camp, Second Cave, Kikelewa and the dramatic Mawenzi area before crossing toward Kibo for the summit attempt to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres.

After the summit attempt, the journey descends on the Marangu side toward Horombo and Marangu Gate. The itinerary is designed for active travellers seeking a different approach to Kilimanjaro with progressive altitude gain, varied mountain scenery and views toward Mawenzi, while recognising that weather, health, fitness and individual response to altitude can affect progress and that reaching the summit can never be guaranteed.

Your Kilimanjaro Journey

Day-by-Day Rongai Route Itinerary

Eight carefully planned days combine your pre-climb preparation in Arusha with a seven-day journey from the northern slopes of Kilimanjaro toward Mawenzi, Kibo and Uhuru Peak before descending through the Marangu side.

Duration 8 Days / 7 Nights
Mountain Trek 7 Days • Rongai Route
Highest Point Uhuru Peak • 5,895 m
Start & Finish Arusha
Day 01

Arrive in Arusha and settle into your confirmed pre-climb accommodation. Use the day to recover from your journey and prepare for the mountain.

Meet your Kilimanjaro team for a detailed briefing covering the Rongai Route, expected mountain conditions, altitude, daily routines and safety.

Your equipment can also be reviewed so that any missing personal gear or rental items can be organised before travelling toward the northern side of Kilimanjaro the following morning.

Location Arusha
Main Activity Briefing & Gear Check
Overnight Arusha Hotel
Arrival Mountain Briefing Gear Check Rest
Day 02

After breakfast, travel from Arusha toward Kilimanjaro's northern side and Rongai Gate. Complete the required park registration while your mountain crew organises equipment and supplies.

Begin trekking through the lower slopes, where cultivated areas gradually give way to forest and heath vegetation. The first mountain day is deliberately measured as you begin adjusting to the climb.

Continue toward Simba Camp at approximately 2,600 metres for dinner and your first overnight on Kilimanjaro.

Route Rongai Gate → Simba
Approx. Elevation Simba • ~2,600 m
Overnight Simba Camp
Rongai Gate Northern Slopes First Trek Mountain Camp
Day 03

Leave Simba Camp and continue gradually upward as the vegetation opens into heath and moorland. The broader landscape begins to reveal views toward Kilimanjaro's higher volcanic peaks when weather conditions are clear.

Maintain a controlled pace and continue drinking regularly as elevation increases. The shorter progression of this day supports gradual adjustment before moving higher.

Arrive around the Second Cave area at approximately 3,450 metres, where you settle into camp and rest for the afternoon.

Route Simba → Second Cave
Approx. Elevation ~3,450 m
Overnight Second Cave
Moorland Mawenzi Views Acclimatization Northern Slopes
Day 04

Continue across the increasingly open moorland as the route gradually turns toward the distinctive rocky profile of Mawenzi.

This comparatively measured trekking stage keeps the daily elevation gain controlled and adds another night before moving above 4,000 metres.

Reach the Kikelewa area at approximately 3,600 metres. Settle into camp, eat well and continue monitoring how your body responds to altitude.

Route Second Cave → Kikelewa
Approx. Elevation ~3,600 m
Overnight Kikelewa Camp
Moorland Mawenzi Gradual Ascent Acclimatization
Day 05

Leave Kikelewa and climb steadily toward Mawenzi as the terrain becomes increasingly rocky and high-altitude vegetation becomes more limited.

Mawenzi's rugged ridges dominate the landscape as you approach the tarn beneath the peak. The shorter trekking stage allows time for rest after arriving at higher elevation.

Settle near Mawenzi Tarn at approximately 4,300 metres. Depending on conditions and your guide's plan, a controlled acclimatization walk may be considered before returning to camp.

Destination Mawenzi Tarn
Approx. Elevation ~4,300 m
Overnight Mawenzi Tarn
Mawenzi High Altitude Acclimatization Alpine Landscape
Day 06

Leave Mawenzi and cross the broad high-altitude Saddle separating Mawenzi from Kibo. The terrain becomes increasingly dry, exposed and desert-like.

Continue steadily across this dramatic landscape toward the Kibo area at approximately 4,700 metres. Keep your pace deliberately slow and communicate any altitude symptoms to your guide.

After arriving at Kibo, eat, hydrate and prepare your summit equipment before resting ahead of the overnight summit attempt.

Route Mawenzi → Kibo
Approx. Elevation Kibo • ~4,700 m
Overnight Kibo Area
Kibo–Mawenzi Saddle Alpine Desert Summit Preparation High Altitude
Day 07

Wake around midnight or shortly before and prepare for the longest and most demanding stage of your Rongai journey.

Begin climbing slowly through cold, dark high-altitude terrain toward the crater rim. Depending on your health and conditions, continue toward Gilman's Point and onward toward Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres.

Reaching Uhuru Peak depends on your physical condition, altitude response, weather and guide assessment. Safety always takes priority, and turning around before the summit may be necessary.

After the summit attempt, descend toward Kibo for a short rest before continuing much lower toward the Horombo area for food and overnight rest.

Highest Point Uhuru Peak • 5,895 m
Main Activity Summit Attempt & Descent
Overnight Horombo Area • ~3,720 m

Day 08

After breakfast, begin the final descent from Horombo, gradually leaving the high moorland and returning toward the greener lower slopes.

Continue through the Marangu side of the mountain toward Marangu Gate, where the trekking portion of your Rongai journey ends.

Meet your vehicle for the transfer back to Arusha. From here you can continue with an additional hotel stay, northern Tanzania safari or Zanzibar beach extension according to your confirmed travel plans.

Altitude & mountain safety: Kilimanjaro is a high-altitude trek and reaching Uhuru Peak cannot be guaranteed. Weather, health, physical condition and individual response to altitude may affect progress. Your mountain guide may adjust pace or timing and may stop further ascent or require descent when necessary for safety. Always report headaches, dizziness, nausea, unusual fatigue or other concerning symptoms promptly.

Kilimanjaro Questions

Rongai Route FAQs

Helpful information about Rongai's northern approach, altitude, accommodation, preparation and what to expect from the climb.

What makes the Rongai Route different?

Rongai approaches Kilimanjaro from the northern side rather than the southern and western approaches used by several other routes. It passes toward Mawenzi before crossing the high saddle to Kibo and normally descends toward Marangu.

Is reaching Uhuru Peak guaranteed?

No. No Kilimanjaro route can guarantee a summit. Altitude, health, fitness, fatigue, weather and other mountain conditions may affect your progress. Guide and safety decisions always take priority.

Why does this itinerary include an acclimatization day?

The additional day around Mawenzi Tarn gives the body more time at altitude before moving to the higher Kibo area. Your guide may use part of the day for a controlled acclimatization walk before returning to camp.

Where do we sleep on the Rongai Route?

Most of the route uses designated mountain camping areas. The itinerary passes through areas such as Simba, Kikelewa, Mawenzi, Kibo and Horombo. Your exact overnight arrangements are confirmed with your licensed mountain operator and final itinerary.

How difficult is the Rongai Route?

Rongai is a demanding high-altitude trek. Technical mountaineering experience is not normally required on the standard route, but climbers should be prepared for several consecutive trekking days, steep sections, cold conditions and a very long summit day.

Do we descend the same way we climb?

No. The Rongai approach begins on Kilimanjaro's northern side, while the normal descent continues toward Horombo and exits through Marangu Gate.

What should I do if I feel altitude symptoms?

Tell your mountain guide immediately. Headache, nausea, dizziness, unusual fatigue, breathing difficulty or other concerning symptoms should never be hidden. Your guide may slow your ascent, stop further climbing or arrange descent.

Do I need previous climbing experience?

Previous technical mountaineering experience is not normally required for the standard Rongai Route, but hiking experience, cardiovascular fitness and preparation for consecutive days of walking are strongly beneficial.

What weather should I prepare for?

Kilimanjaro weather can change quickly. Climbers should prepare for strong sun, wind, rain, cold nights and sub-zero conditions during the summit attempt. Appropriate layering and waterproof equipment are essential.

Can I combine Rongai with a safari or Zanzibar?

Yes. After returning to Arusha, you can continue to Tarangire, Serengeti and Ngorongoro or fly onward to Zanzibar for a beach extension. We can coordinate the full itinerary as one Tanzania journey.
