PREPARE FOR THE MOUNTAIN
Tanzania Trekking
Questions, Answered
Route choice, altitude, fitness, equipment and
mountain preparation all play a role in a successful
trek. These answers cover the questions travellers
most often ask before heading to the mountains.
01
When is the best time for trekking in Tanzania?
Mountain conditions vary through the year. Drier
periods are generally popular for trekking, but
temperatures, cloud, rain and conditions can change
quickly at altitude. Your route and dates should
be planned together.
02
Do I need technical climbing experience for Kilimanjaro?
Standard Kilimanjaro routes are trekking routes rather
than technical climbing routes. However, the altitude,
cold temperatures, long trekking days and summit night
make the climb physically and mentally demanding.
03
Which Kilimanjaro route should I choose?
Route choice depends on available time, trekking
experience, desired scenery, accommodation style and
acclimatisation profile. Machame, Lemosho, Rongai,
Marangu and the Northern Circuit each offer a
different mountain experience.
04
How many days should I allow for Kilimanjaro?
The number of trekking days varies by route.
Longer itineraries generally allow a more gradual
mountain journey. We recommend choosing your route
based on the overall experience rather than simply
selecting the shortest option.
05
How difficult is climbing Kilimanjaro?
Kilimanjaro is achievable for many prepared trekkers,
but it should not be underestimated. The major challenge
is altitude combined with long walking days, changing
weather and the demanding final summit ascent.
06
What should I know about altitude sickness?
Anyone can be affected by altitude regardless of
fitness. Trek slowly, follow your mountain team's
guidance and report symptoms immediately. Your guide
may change the pace, stop an ascent or recommend
descent when safety requires it.
07
How fit do I need to be?
Prepare for several consecutive days of walking.
Cardiovascular endurance, leg strength and regular
hiking are useful. Training with the footwear and
daypack you intend to use can also improve comfort.
08
What equipment should I bring?
You will need suitable trekking boots, layered clothing,
waterproof protection, warm summit clothing, gloves,
headwear, a daypack and other mountain essentials.
A complete packing list should be provided before travel.
09
Who supports me on the mountain?
Kilimanjaro expeditions are supported by a professional
mountain team that may include guides, assistant guides,
cooks and porters depending on group size and route.
10
Where do I sleep during the climb?
Most Kilimanjaro routes use mountain camps and tents.
Marangu is different because trekkers stay in mountain
huts. Accommodation before and after the trek can be
selected separately according to your travel style.
11
What are the toilet and washing facilities like?
Facilities are simpler than at a hotel. Available
arrangements depend on the route and expedition setup.
We explain the expected camp facilities before your
trek so you can prepare appropriately.
12
Is tipping the mountain crew expected?
Tipping is customary when you are happy with the
service provided. We can give you clear guidance
before the trek so you understand how crew tipping
is normally handled.
13
Can Mount Meru help me prepare for Kilimanjaro?
Yes. Mount Meru can be enjoyed as a standalone
mountain adventure or used as an acclimatisation
trek before Kilimanjaro.
14
Is Ol Doinyo Lengai suitable for everyone?
No. Ol Doinyo Lengai has steep, loose volcanic terrain
and is physically demanding. Conditions must be assessed
locally, and travellers should follow guide-led safety
decisions before and during the ascent.
15
Can I combine trekking with safari or Zanzibar?
Yes. Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru work naturally with
northern Tanzania safaris, while Zanzibar can provide
a relaxing finale after the mountain.
